Selling Your Home; Not Your Lifestyle
written by Jim Grant
Is it time to shed some remnants of your lifestyle? Too much clutter ranks right up there with a bad roof or a poor furnace in terms of killing a potential sale.
If I can’t get though a bedroom for clothes, can’t see the washer for piles of laundry or am afraid of something falling out of a closet and hitting a client on the head, I’m going to be seriously challenged in selling your home. I believe that in some cases, getting rid of the clutter will be the easiest $5,000.00 you’ve ever made!
Three sets of the same wrenches, old documents, a table with a missing leg, pictures of someone no one can remember, clothes that were in style 10 years ago, swag lamps, spoon collections, mismatched or even matched cups and saucers, the list goes on! My best advice – “do I really need this?” How will some of these treasures look in your new home? The old adage “if you haven’t used it in a year, get rid of it” certainly works for increased selling potential.
Have you ever gone out to purchase a car and found the model you want cluttered with newspapers, candy, pop bottles and the ash tray full? I haven’t! The opposite is true because automotive dealers want to market the vehicle in the best possible manner. In fact, the car has probably been recently washed and the carpets shampooed. The same applies to selling homes. Put some money in your pockets by de-cluttering.
